Istanbul: Autumn 21

Istanbul: Autumn 21

Leanne - our in-house jewellery designer and wanderluster - joined Katie for her first trip to Istanbul earlier this month. Returning home with treasures, tales and Turkish delight, I caught up with Leanne for a debrief:
Why Istanbul:
To finally meet our suppliers face-to-face and source new pieces for our Spring/Summer 22 collection. I chat to Hamza and his team of artisans - the makers behind so many of our stand-out pieces - most days via WhatsApp and email. This trip has taught me that nothing beats personal connections.

First Impressions:
A magical city of east meets west, with such warm and welcoming people.

Typical Day:
We started most days with a swim in the hotel pool, followed by breakfast - a treat of the trip. We'd then meet with suppliers, chat over our ideas, share and tweak new designs for next season and immerse ourselves in an array of fabrics and textiles... decisions, decisions.

Lunch was a good opportunity to get to know our suppliers more personally - relax, meet their families, laugh and catch-up. And share good food. We tucked into some delicious Turkish dishes: big plates of Turkish kebabs, meze and great salads.

On our last day, we explored the city, and with Katie as my tour guide, Istanbul impressed. Taking in some of the main sights - the Blue Mosque with it's prayers echoing out and the Grand Bazaar, a massive maze of stalls and shopping. We
visited Katie's favourite cafés and bakeries dishing up ample servings of cakes & sweet treats - you can't beat insider tips for a foodie fix! The cities shopping deserves a shout out too - from artisan traditions to local treasures to designer dupes - I wanted to bring everything home.

Spending time with our jewellery supplier - watching them work and gaining a better understanding of the processes involved. They are incredibly talented and creative.
And cake! We had the most delicious cake at Hafiz Mustafa - the choice was off the scale. Such a fun and memorable Istanbul experience, shared with Katie.
2021 Inspo:
We have sourced some beautiful new textiles and hand painted ceramics.

Collaboratively, we're working on some pretty new jewellery too, which we'll showcase at Top Drawer in January. You can expect big summer vibes and plenty of bright colours. Some of our new season pieces really are summer personified - they'll have you daydreaming about carefree, lighter days.

Katie and I feel in love with these Iranian wooden boxes too - a limited number are available online here.  My pictures just don't do them justice.

Turkey, you were a pleasure.
